Whole Systems Approach for Women

Evidence shows that a significant number of women from Ayrshire find themselves in custody.

Work has been undertaken locally to ‘reimagine custody’ and also looked at a local ‘whole system’ for women to make sure that it was robust enough to be ensure that local women would only go into custody if this was appropriate.

Part of this work involved a report, commissioned by South West Scotland Community Justice Authority, which set out a range of recommendations which could be considered to join up and improve the flow of services locally for women.

A Whole Systems Approach for Women Implementation Group is taking forward these recommendations.

This complements developments led by the Scottish Prisoner Service to adapt current custody arrangements for women to a national facility for around 100 women and five community custodial units for around 20 women each.
