Children & Families Affected by Justice
We know that the effects of involvement in the justice system can have a ‘ripple effect’ to children, other family members, and the wider community.
Research by Families Outside has told us that approximately 27,000 children in Scotland are affected by parental imprisonment, and that 60% of boys with a convicted parent go on to offend themselves. We also know that the chances of a child suffering from mental and / or physical ill-health increases if they have a parent in prison.
Parental imprisonment is one of several Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that Community Justice Ayrshire and our partners will focus on over the coming months and years in an effort to give children across Ayrshire an equal start in life.
More information on our work in this area will follow soon.
